Bottom of the Tide

Good morning everyone. It is a rather warm morning here created by low pressure passing to the west of us and sweeping with it moist tropical air right up the coast. Seems like winter is taking a rest according to the forecast and rain is predicted to fall tonight. We have a few roofs with 18" of snow on them which need to get shoveled off today.

Today is the full Cold moon. With the winter solstice and the moon at perigee (closest to Earth in its orbit) just yesterday the tides are responding predictably. So here in New England we are at the bottom of the tide, figuratively and literally. The light begins to return. We have gained a minute of light and the sun has gained a minute of declination on its northward journey since yesterday; all these celestial events according to the Old Farmers almanac. The tides in Camden are the biggest of the year. 13.4 feet of tidal range separate high tide this morning from low tide this afternoon in a place where the average tide is closer to 9.5 feet. But the ebb and flow of the tide is mirrored in our psyches. I know the light is returning and with it my spirits lift. Sailing is on its way! Imagine... sitting on the rail soaking up sun and laughter and the smell of an ocean breeze. We will enjoy the cave of darkness for a few months yet but by the end of February we will be positively chomping at the bit to tear the cover off and bend on sail. Ah, patience young firecat. All in good time. May the returning light fill your soul with warmth to carry you through the darkness ahead.

"Bottom of the Tide" I've been looking at the title of this post for several days and wondering why it bothered me so. Living in the state of Alabama one cannot help but be a little sensitive about the word "Tide." The little bit of coastline Alabama enjoys experiences a very small change in tidal elevation especially when compared to Maine. No, here in Alabama when someone mentions "The Tide" they are talking about the Crimson Tide of the University of Alabama. This is the land where parents raise their children to be Alabama fans unless they raise them to be Auburn fans. One has no choice, if born in Alabama, but to be either a Tide fan or a Tiger fan. So when I see "Bottom of the Tide" I wonder, what controversy has the football team stirred up this time?

My heart is heavy with sadness as I write this particular blog. Since the beginning of August our dear friend and cook for the last 12 years, Mary Barney, had been struggling with cancer. I have intentionally respected Mary’s privacy and I apologize to you for not sharing any news about Mary’s health sooner. On Monday afternoon Mary passed away very peacefully at home, surrounded by friends and “family”. Her departure was as graceful as the rest of her life. Many people, including Jen, have been doing heroic work to support Mary these last few weeks. Oddly enough Mary was never very excited about transitions though this was about the fastest transition she ever made. And as I struggle to let go of Mary I realize I am terrible with transitions as well. A Golden Windjammer Anniversary

Happy Birthday Mary Day! 50 years ago today Mary Day slid out of the shed at the Harvey F. Gamage Shipyard in South Bristol, Maine marking the beginning of a whole new chapter in the history of the windjammer fleet. The Gamage yard had not launched a schooner since 1933 and Mary Day was the first commercial coasting schooner launched since 1938. That also makes her the first commercial coasting schooner launched in the second half of the 20th century and the first schooner ever launched for the windjammer passenger trade. There may be a few more firsts in there but that doesn't really matter. What is most important about this celebration is the fact that Mary Day was launched today and began her career touching the lives of thousands of people. This schooner was built by people, for people and has never done anything else but bring joy to peoples lives. She has become a legendary windjammer here along the Maine coast as part of the largest fleet of commercial coasting schooners...
