Spring Cleaning

Good morning everyone. A whopping 16 degrees here this morning. We had a busy weekend around here and at the boat. Frankly we are feeling a little overwhelmed by it all. We just can't seem to keep up with it (read our expectations). I spent Saturday down at schooner taking advantage of a few more hours aboard. I am happy to report that the bilges are dry. The cover needed a little tightening in places after all the windy weather we have had. Sawyer and I winterized the miscellaneous gasoline engines by changing the oil, fogging the cylinders, and draining the saltwater intake lines for the fire pump, and putting fuel stabilizer in the tanks. I am trying a new old trick by pouring molasses in a few of the drain lines. I have heard the old timers did this years ago to keep the thru-hull fittings from weeping saltwater back in to the lines. This technique should make our annual overhaul of the thru-hull fittings a little more sweet. We have not seen ice on the harbor yet but it can't be far off.

We have family descending upon us this week and that means it is time to clean house. One of the things that we as a windjammer family do is spring cleaning in the fall. Our spring is so crazy that we could never tackle these kinds of projects. We literally removed everything (appliances too!)from the kitchen yesterday and spent 8 hours cleaning and scrubbing. See what I mean about expectations. Now who is going to look under the refrigerator? Amazing how many of the kids and cats toys were hiding under the oven. At any rate it is some sort of cathartic process that makes us feel better about house and home.

You don't hire out for cleaning services, do you? ("hire out" is a southernism) Well, it is a whopping 75 degrees here and we are still in the middle of a drought of biblical proportions. Only 25 inches of rain this year, out of a normal 55 or so. Some of the larger trees are going into distress.
Maybe a little rain tomorrow and a cold front which will get us all the way down to 35 degrees. I long for some cold and snow. Haven't seen any snow here since the great blizzard of '93. We got 38 inches of snow at one time. Not too bad for Alabama. Tell the Mary Day to sleep well.

Hey Al, What would happen here in Alabama if Molasses was used in the lines? Some sort of insect infestation?

My heart is heavy with sadness as I write this particular blog. Since the beginning of August our dear friend and cook for the last 12 years, Mary Barney, had been struggling with cancer. I have intentionally respected Mary’s privacy and I apologize to you for not sharing any news about Mary’s health sooner. On Monday afternoon Mary passed away very peacefully at home, surrounded by friends and “family”. Her departure was as graceful as the rest of her life. Many people, including Jen, have been doing heroic work to support Mary these last few weeks. And as I struggle to let go of Mary I realize I am terrible with transitions as well. We are Nuts

Good morning everyone. Well I just had to say it before you did. Yes, we are truly nuts. Now we have gone and added one more adventure to our already full lives. As you can see she is some cunnin'. We have named her Colby. We had a sign... literally. We were in the car brainstorming names on the way to get her at WalMart (yes, you heard it right) and there at the Waterville exit was a sign for Colby College. Colby just happens to be dear Mary's alma mater. It is also the name of one of my favorite ledges in Jericho Bay, the Colby Pup. It just seemed to fit just like the way she came to us. Nothing about our Sunday was going to be different than any other except that I just happened to be helping a friend get her generator back in the barn while Jen and the kids met her new puppy Sherman. Galley Gadgets

Good morning everyone. As any of you who have sailed with me know I love gadgets. Creating new and easy ways of doing things is a fun challenge for me even if I am slow on the uptake. So here is a gadget I have tried before that I felt I should share with the universe. I am sure I am not the first person to think of this but, hey, this works slicker than greased owl droppings and it reeks just enough of red neck that the devil in me just has to laugh. We buy our peanut butter by the 9 lb. tub. The stuff we buy is that organic, all natural stuff with the hefty layer of oil on top when you open the lid. I have tried inverting the tub every few days to get the oil to work its way through but getting even consistency is still a challenge. Who hasn't got to the bottom of this kind of a peanut butter tub to find a layer of peanut butter cement? The mother of invention was not necessity.
