A Rainy Day in Windjammer World

Good morning everyone. Today is a shop day here in Maine. Torrential rains and thunderstorms are working their way up the coast as we speak and easterly winds are gusting in the harbor. So in their infinite wisdom the crew decided it would be best to work here at the global headquarters. Jen and I backed the yawl boat Arno into the barn last night. Our small sailing dinghy Rosie is in the shop getting ready for interior painting. Jen and Katie are putting the finishing touches on the quarterboards, carved by Havilah and Ron Hawkins back in the 70s when they were sailing with Buds Hawkins, their dad. 40 years old they require a little nursing each year to keep them going. The gold leaf detail is just beautiful and we don't mind spending a little extra of your hard earned money to keep them shining with the real stuff. Gold paint just doesn't even come close. Colby is overseeing everything from the comfort of her office (the couch) with occasional trips to the schooner for deck inspections.

The gold leaf looks great. Nothing can compare to real gold leaf. Thanks for the update and for taking such good care of that beautiful lady, Mary Day.

Looks like Colby got promoted to supervisor. Does she get paid in milk bones? LOL

It would be too early here to remove the winter cover but the time must be drawing near in Maine.

Many folks travel single so you will not be alone. If your friends and family think your crazy then you are the kind of adventurous person we enjoy sailing with!

Dear Anonymous, As someone who loves to travel solo, I feel that I must address your posting. I have been sailing on the Mary Day since 2002, and am looking forward to my 10th trip. I ALWAYS travel alone! The first time, I had my moment of uncertainty, which went away after about 10 minutes on board. This is the ideal vacation for the solo traveler. You can keep to yourself, or meet and join others - the choice is yours. During the years that I've been sailing, I have met many wonderful people. We often sail together year after year, and keep in touch during the year via email, snail mail and phone calls. The captains are right; you are the kind of adventurous and intrepid traveler that we welcome onboard the beautiful Mary Day. By all means, book your trip, and prepare yourself for the vacation of a lifetime. Only, be warned; this can become addictive!

Dear Anonomous, I too have been a solo traveler. I have been sailing with Capts Barry and Jen for (dare I say) 20+ years, and until I found my life partner, now husband, I ALWAYS traveled alone. It is an amazing experience to be aboard the Mary Day for a week.. and you will not be disappointed. I agree with what Michele says 100%. Come join the Mary Day family!

Hail Mary

My heart is heavy with sadness as I write this particular blog. Since the beginning of August our dear friend and cook for the last 12 years, Mary Barney, had been struggling with cancer. I have intentionally respected Mary’s privacy and I apologize to you for not sharing any news about Mary’s health sooner. On Monday afternoon Mary passed away very peacefully at home, surrounded by friends and “family”. Her departure was as graceful as the rest of her life. Many people, including Jen, have been doing heroic work to support Mary these last few weeks. Swimming Anyone?

Good morning everyone. Winter is still here in New England though it seems to be taking a rest these days. We have enjoyed a little bit of a thaw. We still have snow covering our field but it is thinning out in the sunny patches. Mary Day rests comfortably in the harbor, bilges dry, cover intact, waiting for the crew to return. Another busy week has passed so I will get you up to speed on everything that is happening here at the global headquarters. Jen is putting the finishing touches on year end taxes. Blockfest 2008 is finally finished. The blocks have received quite the massaging. And while we have the off-white paint out we are starting in on the lifeline stanchions, the davits, and a few other miscellaneous parts. Alex asked me last night how we were doing with our pace. Fall Maintenance

Good morning everyone. The sun has been kind to us these past few days and the crew has been spending much time aloft prepping and painting the mast heads and tarring the rig as part of our annual fall maintenance schedule. They were a little silly on tar fumes by the end of the day hence the rat board dance moves. Am I the only one who is reminded of Willy Wonka's little friends at the sight of the crew in their tyvek suits? Schoona-loompas? The smell of tar, after all, is what we sailors live for. Extracted from the stumps and roots of pine trees through dry distillation pine tar will cure what ails you especially some skin conditions and any emotional maladies from being too long away from the sea. All we know for sure is that Mary Day’s rigging is kept hail and hearty by coats of tar mixed with boiled linseed oil. Notice that I specified boiled linseed oil and not raw linseed oil. Tar mix with raw linseed oil will not “kick”. Don’t ask me how I know this… just take my wo...
