And so It Begins

Good morning everyone. And so it begins... getting ready for next season. We have so much to do and so little time before we once again reach over the rail to welcome you again. Thanks to Jim for sharing his cover pictures last week. We just beat the storm that blew through New England last Friday. I was so happy to be under cover. The crew worked incredible hard to "git 'er done." Thursday night we enjoyed our end of the season crew dinner and then enjoyed a long weekend. I spent Friday running around clearing trees with the fire department and looking over a carpentry job coming up in November. Saturday and Sunday spent helping Mom move. Yesterday right back to it in the office and at the boat. No chance of moss growing anywhere near my feet.While the rest of the crew have moved on Katie and Rob are putting the boat to bed. Yesterday was spent sanding mastheads aloft and spars under the cover. We like to get the mastheads painted in the autumn for maximum protection against the elements.
I enjoyed seeing the moon last week against the golden light on the mastheads.

While the beautiful Mary Day settles in for her long winter my little dinghy made her first voyage Friday. I have posted comments and pictures on my blog.

As some of you may remember in the blog “Flying Bye” I heard a “tapping, as of some one gently rapping, rapping at my chamber door” . . . I slowly opened the door to the notorious Mr. Cabbage Head, he was extremely dirty and bedraggled. He gave me quite a fright and a chill but I felt sorry for the poor fellow. He was terribly hurt by all the rejection. I invited him in for a good cleaning. Suddenly the unsavory Mr. Cabbage Head became much more appealing with all the layers of dirt and wilt removed. I held him for a little while . . . smelled the sweet scent of a clean but slightly aged cabbage. Only those of us who enjoy the strong aroma, the smooth and slightly salty sweet taste, of a good Stilton know what I mean. I gently placed Mr. Cabbage Head on the counter to rest.

After a long day of yard work I came into the kitchen and was enjoying a glass of Chianti. I picked up Mr. Cabbage Head and admired his weighty green head and tender leaves. The cool fall evening and my hunger got the best of me. I grabbed my best kitchen knife and . . . you didn’t . . . yes I did! . . . as Halloween would have it I chopped up Mr. Cabbage Head and made a wicked cabbage soup out of the good fellow. Shame, shame, you all missed a delightful meal. What tasty treats might the veggies of the beautiful Schooner Mary Day provide next time.

Lady M, your cabbage soup is a fitting finale for Mr. Cabbage. I’m glad he redeemed himself in the end.

I don’t know if he left any relatives behind, but for those of you who may be visited by other cabbages, here is a delicious, easy, low-fat, and healthy vegetable soup:

Garden Vegetable Soup

2/3 cup sliced carrots
1/2 cup diced onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
3 cups broth (beef, chicken or vegetable)
1 1/2 cups diced green cabbage
1/2 cup green beans
1 tablespoon tomato paste
1/2 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup diced zucchini or summer squash

In large saucepan, sprayed with nonstick cooking spray, sauté carrot, onion, and garlic over low heat until softened, about 5 minutes.

Add broth, cabbage, beans, tomato paste, basil, oregano, and salt; bring to a boil. Lower heat and simmer, covered, about 15 minutes or until beans are tender.

Stir in zucchini and heat 5 minutes.

My heart is heavy with sadness as I write this particular blog. Since the beginning of August our dear friend and cook for the last 12 years, Mary Barney, had been struggling with cancer. I have intentionally respected Mary’s privacy and I apologize to you for not sharing any news about Mary’s health sooner. On Monday afternoon Mary passed away very peacefully at home, surrounded by friends and “family”. Her departure was as graceful as the rest of her life. Many people, including Jen, have been doing heroic work to support Mary these last few weeks. Oddly enough Mary was never very excited about transitions though this was about the fastest transition she ever made. And as I struggle to let go of Mary I realize I am terrible with transitions as well. We used to joke about how we liked things just the way they are, thank you very much, so why change what is working already even if it might be less labor intensive. Hard works is its own reward. A Beautiful Sight

During one of our 6 day cruises in July 2010 I was up early one morning and caught a neat reflection of this good looking schooner in Great Cove off Brooklin, Maine. It is one of the loveliest schooners with a graceful sweeping sheer that goes on forever and lovely douglas fir spars that receive a good scraping and slushing every fall. I am a sucker for a beautiful windjammer. OK, you schooner experts out there. Which windjammer is it? Have a great day. Be well. Do good.
