Good morning everyone. If time flies when you are having fun we must be having the time of our lives. The last few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity. The schooner has looked much like the last blog about swarming bees, a hive of activity that has spilled over into the wee hours of dawn and dusk. When will we ever learn to let a few things go instead of trying to get everything perfect at the last minute? The crew has done a magnificent job all reflected in the wonderful time we had Memorial Day weekend. The weather was perfect and the NW wind on Sunday had us passing many miles under the fresh paint on the keel.We spent most of Sunday bowling along at 7 or 8 knots with few peeks at 1O knots with just the four lower sails set. What a thrill!

As many of you guessed the secret project was a new main topmast. She is all shiny bright and standing proudly over the harbor. Here are a few photos by Jim Dugan of the topmast arriving in Camden and being carried aboard. We got more than a few looks driving the 41 foot stick through the streets of Appleton, Hope and Camden. Gracious me... hasn't anyone seen a topmast before?

My my my Mary Day! Look at that shiny, new topmast! You will be the envy of all the schooners this summer. You already are the most beautiful ship in Camden Harbor and the loveliest to sail Penobscot Bay. But now, with all the new accessories and TLC, you are the queen of the Maine coast. I can't wait to see you, beautiful girl. :)

One of the reasons many of us keep coming back year after year is the attention to details you lavish on the schooner. Fresh paint, shining brass, bright brightwork, clean heads, a beautiful deck, and a saloon/galley where we love to eat all contribute to an unforgettable adventure. Thanks to Captains Jen and Barry but especially to the whole crew who keep this beautiful ship "ship-shape" for all of us.

Wow. Looks great. This will be my first, but hopefully not my last, sailing trip on the Mary Day. I feel like I've come to know her, that she's a part of me. How does that happen? Thanks Barry/Jen and the crew for all the hard work. See ya soon.

Well, I know a topmast has a truck on it, but I have never seen a truck with a topmast on it.

My heart is heavy with sadness as I write this particular blog. Since the beginning of August our dear friend and cook for the last 12 years, Mary Barney, had been struggling with cancer. I have intentionally respected Mary’s privacy and I apologize to you for not sharing any news about Mary’s health sooner. On Monday afternoon Mary passed away very peacefully at home, surrounded by friends and “family”. Her departure was as graceful as the rest of her life. We are Nuts

Good morning everyone. Well I just had to say it before you did. Yes, we are truly nuts. Now we have gone and added one more adventure to our already full lives. As you can see she is some cunnin'. We have named her Colby. We had a sign... literally. We were in the car brainstorming names on the way to get her at WalMart (yes, you heard it right) and there at the Waterville exit was a sign for Colby College. Colby just happens to be dear Mary's alma mater. It is also the name of one of my favorite ledges in Jericho Bay, the Colby Pup. It just seemed to fit just like the way she came to us. Nothing about our Sunday was going to be different than any other except that I just happened to be helping a friend get her generator back in the barn while Jen and the kids met her new puppy Sherman. Galley Gadgets

Good morning everyone. As any of you who have sailed with me know I love gadgets. Creating new and easy ways of doing things is a fun challenge for me even if I am slow on the uptake. So here is a gadget I have tried before that I felt I should share with the universe. I am sure I am not the first person to think of this but, hey, this works slicker than greased owl droppings and it reeks just enough of red neck that the devil in me just has to laugh. We buy our peanut butter by the 9 lb. tub. The stuff we buy is that organic, all natural stuff with the hefty layer of oil on top when you open the lid. I have tried inverting the tub every few days to get the oil to work its way through but getting even consistency is still a challenge. Who hasn't got to the bottom of this kind of a peanut butter tub to find a layer of peanut butter cement? The mother of invention was not necessity.
