The Sweet Taste of Summer

Good morning everyone. Sunrise at Isle Au Haut was nothing short of inspirational today. A low, thin cloud shield to the east was crimson at dawn as Katie and I rowed ashore for a run. When the sun broke the horizon there were just not enough eyeballs in my head to take it all in. And of course my camera was aboard. Katie and I agreed that mental photographs keep longest, or at least until the mindful hard drive crashes. This entire week has been filled with sunrises and sunsets that fill my heart with joy and my hard drive with images to carry me through the winter. After several weeks of heat and humidity and great swim calls fall temperatures are at the door. A frost warning was posted for northern Maine yesterday morning. We picnicked earlier this week in one of my favorite coves with the hills of Acadia as our backdrop. We had the place to ourselves, unusual for this time of year. I cherished that night with all my soul. The previous night anchored off the busy summer anchora

Summertime... and the living just is

Good morning everyone. I am writing to you this morning from Pretty Marsh, Maine, USA. Summertime weather is making a strong showing here on the Maine Coast. The temperatures are soaring into the 70s and cool afternoon sea breezes keep things mighty comfortable. This week we finally made it across the Bass Harbor Bar into the heart of Acadia National Park. Yesterday morning we sailed up into Somes Sound, the only fjord on the East coast of the United States. The pilot schooner Virginia was anchored up in Valley Cove and standing on the rail was former crew member Nate Killops. A light easterly wind carried us back into Blue Hill Bay and up to a secluded cove where we enjoyed a huge lobster feast and great swimming. The water temperature is really quite warm by any standard. Last night we were serenaded by the loons calling in the cove and the coyotes calling in the woods. The moon rise over Cadillac Mt just after 11 PM made the evening trip to the head a real treat.Days like th

Sweet Week

Good morning everyone. This has been a very sweet week. The sun has final made a confirmed appearance here in Maine, not that sunshine makes any difference to us. We have fun no matter what the weather is. But it is nice to see so much of the Maine coast in one week. Maine photographer Jim Dugan tried to hitch a ride as he does from the harbor side porch at his office. Nice legs Jim! I took a moment to get aloft on Monday to see the Camden Hills and photograph the Lewis R French sailing smartly and looking as beautiful as she always does. The scenery was breathtaking. Jim Dugan always says to get the shot from angles that are unusual. I figure 70 feet up is a little out of the ordinary. We visited Wooden Boat where the crew jumped ship with our navigating goddess friend Jane Ahlfeld. They had fun sailing someone elses boat. The wind died but determined they were to keep her moving. The should have had a yawl boat. Tuesday night we went to the Sweet Chariot Folk Music Festival
